How to Get Xbox Game Pass on Steam Deck (3 Methods)

Xbox Game Pass works on Steam Deck — just not the way you might expect. There’s no official Xbox app for SteamOS, so you stream Game Pass titles through a browser using Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud). For most games, it works well. For a handful of titles, there are native alternatives worth knowing about.

What You Need

  • An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription ($14.99/month) — Cloud Gaming requires Ultimate, not the PC-only tier
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection (15 Mbps minimum, 30 Mbps recommended)
  • Microsoft Edge or a Chromium-based browser on your Steam Deck

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1 — Switch to Desktop Mode. Hold the Power button, select “Switch to Desktop,” and wait for the KDE desktop to load.

Step 2 — Install Microsoft Edge. Open the Discover software center from the taskbar. Search for “Microsoft Edge” and install it. Edge has the best Xbox Cloud Gaming compatibility of any browser on Linux.

Step 3 — Log in at xbox.com/play. Open Edge, navigate to xbox.com/play, and sign in with your Microsoft account. You’ll see your Game Pass library immediately.

Step 4 — Add as a Non-Steam App. To play in Gaming Mode (controller interface, full screen), right-click the Microsoft Edge shortcut on your desktop and select “Add to Steam.” Then edit the shortcut to add --app=https://www.xbox.com/play as a launch argument. This opens Edge directly to xCloud in fullscreen.

Step 5 — Configure controls. In Gaming Mode, access the Steam Deck’s controller settings for the Edge shortcut. Set the layout to “Gamepad” — this maps the physical buttons properly for xCloud’s controller detection.

Performance and What to Expect

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams at up to 1080p/60fps, which looks sharp on the Steam Deck’s 7–8 inch screen. Latency on a good home network is typically 20–40ms — fine for single-player games and casual multiplayer. Competitive shooters (Halo, Call of Duty) are playable but not ideal for ranked matches.

Games that work great via xCloud on Steam Deck:

  • Starfield — open-world RPG, slow-paced input, streams perfectly
  • Forza Horizon 5 — racing, generous with input timing, excellent on cloud
  • Sea of Thieves — co-op, relaxed pace, great for casual sessions
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator — too GPU-heavy to run natively on Deck, works great via cloud
  • Psychonauts 2, A Plague Tale, Hi-Fi Rush — narrative/action games that stream without issues

Tip: Some Game Pass Games Run Natively on Steam Deck

Many Game Pass for PC titles are also sold on Steam with full Linux/Proton support. If a game is in your Game Pass subscription AND available on Steam, you can add it to your Steam library and run it natively — better performance, no streaming lag, works offline.

Examples: Hades, Deep Rock Galactic, Vampire Survivors, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Check ProtonDB.com to see if a specific game runs natively before choosing cloud vs. native.

Battery Life

Cloud gaming via browser uses about 3–4 hours of battery. The GPU isn’t rendering the game, but the screen, Wi-Fi radio, and video decoding still draw significant power. Plug in for longer sessions.

Is Game Pass Worth It on Steam Deck?

For the price, yes. Game Pass Ultimate gives you access to hundreds of titles including day-one Xbox exclusives (Starfield, Halo, Forza, Indiana Jones) that you can stream directly on your Steam Deck. If you already have a Game Pass subscription and a decent internet connection, setup takes under 20 minutes and costs nothing extra.

It’s not a replacement for native Steam games — input lag and a required internet connection limit what works well. But as a supplement to your Steam library, it’s excellent value.
