Nintendo Switch 2 Price Increase: Should You Buy Before September 2026?
Nintendo announced a price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2 effective September 2026. The base price rises from $449.99 to $499.99. The increase applies globally with regional adjustments. Nintendo cited “challenging economic conditions and currency fluctuations” as the reason.
The New Switch 2 Prices
| Model | Current Price | New Price (September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 (standard) | $449.99 | $499.99 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | $549.99 |
The increase takes effect in September 2026. Units purchased before then remain at the current price.
Why Is Nintendo Raising Prices?
Nintendo’s stated reason is economic conditions and currency pressure, particularly the weakened yen against the US dollar. The Switch 2 is manufactured in Vietnam and China, both subject to US tariff policies that took effect in 2025. Nintendo is not alone, Valve raised Steam Deck prices by up to 46 percent in May 2026, and Sony has raised PS5 prices in multiple regions over the past two years.
The $50 Switch 2 increase is modest compared to the Steam Deck’s $240 price jump. It brings the Switch 2 to $499.99, which remains competitive against the $789 Steam Deck OLED and $799 ROG Ally X.
Should You Buy a Switch 2 Before September?
If you were already planning to buy a Nintendo Switch 2, buying before September saves $50. That is a concrete, guaranteed saving with no trade-off. The hardware is not changing. The games library is not changing. The only thing that changes is the price.
If you were on the fence, $50 is not a compelling reason to rush a decision. Buy when you are ready and the game library has what you want.
How the Switch 2 Compares at the New Price
