Best Handheld Games Under $20

The best games on any handheld don’t cost much. Most of the titles on this list go on sale for $5-10 regularly, and several are worth full price at $15-20. All of them run well on Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Android handhelds.

Hades — $25 (frequently $10 on sale)

The best action roguelike available. Each run takes 30-60 minutes, you unlock something new every time you play, and the story actually progresses through repetition. 90+ hours before it feels finished. Watch for Steam sales — it drops to $10 several times a year.

Hollow Knight — $15

A metroidvania with 40+ hours of content at a price that should be three times higher. Challenging combat, a large interconnected world, and no hand-holding. One of the most recommended games across every handheld community. Buy it at full price.

Stardew Valley — $15

Farm sim with no fail state and infinite playtime. You set your own goals. It runs on everything, battery drain is minimal, and it’s the game people pick up for five minutes and put down two hours later. Perfect for handheld play.

Vampire Survivors — $5

Five dollars. Endless waves of enemies, dozens of weapons to unlock, and a gameplay loop that produces genuine satisfaction. No skill required to start, a lot of depth once you understand the build systems. The best value on this list.

Celeste — $20

A precision platformer with tight controls and a story that earns its emotional moments. The assist mode lets you adjust difficulty at any point without judgment. 8-15 hours for the main game, much more if you go for all collectibles.

Dead Cells — $25 (frequently $10 on sale)

A roguelike where getting better at the game matters as much as unlocking upgrades. Runs at 60fps on every handheld. Sessions are 30-45 minutes. One of the best portable games for short play windows.

Into the Breach — $15

Turn-based strategy where every enemy attack is telegraphed in advance. You’re solving puzzles as much as playing a tactics game. Perfect information, no luck. Each run takes 2-3 hours. Runs on the lowest-powered hardware.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove — $40 (individual campaigns $20)

Four complete games in one package. Each campaign plays differently. The individual campaigns sell for $20 each. Buy Shovel of Hope first — if you want more, the Treasure Trove adds the rest at a discount.

Slay the Spire — $25 (frequently $10 on sale)

The card-building roguelike that defined the genre. Four characters, each with a different deck strategy. Runs blend deep build decisions with luck management. Each run takes 1-2 hours. Watch for sales — it hits $10 several times a year.

Dave the Diver — $20

Half fishing/diving game, half sushi restaurant management. Unusual combination that works. Around 20 hours to finish, longer if you go for completion. Runs well on all handhelds and plays exactly like it sounds — in the best way.

Where to Find Sales

Steam runs major sales in summer, winter, spring, and fall. Most games on this list drop 50-75% during those windows. The Steam app sends notifications when wishlisted games go on sale. Add them to your wishlist and wait if the full price feels steep.

About the Author
Rotem
I have personally tested the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Retroid Pocket 5, Anbernic RG556, and Lenovo Legion Go. I built The Respawn Rig because I was tired of hunting through outdated forums every time I had a question about portable gaming. Everything I write here is based on real hands-on time with the hardware.
