Steam Deck SSD Upgrade Guide 2026

The Steam Deck’s internal SSD fills up faster than you’d expect. Even the 512GB model runs out quickly once you install a few AAA games. The good news: upgrading the SSD is surprisingly straightforward and dramatically improves your experience.

Why Upgrade?

  • 256GB fills in 3–5 games. Cyberpunk alone is 70GB.
  • Better SSDs offer faster load times
  • 1TB or 2TB options give room for your full library

What SSD You Need

The Steam Deck uses an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 or Gen 4). This is a specific, shorter form factor — standard M.2 2280 drives won’t fit. Double-check before buying.

Recommended SSDs

SSD Size Speed Price
WD Black SN770M 1TB / 2TB Gen 4 ~$80–140
Sabrent Rocket 2230 512GB–1TB Gen 3 ~$55–90
Kingston SNV2S 1TB Gen 3 ~$70

Tools You’ll Need

  • Phillips #0 screwdriver
  • Plastic pry tool (for back panel)
  • Anti-static wrist strap (recommended)
  • 8GB+ USB drive (for SteamOS recovery image)

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Power off completely. Hold power button → Shut Down.

Step 2: Remove the 8 back screws with the #0 Phillips. The outer 4 are shorter — keep them separate.

Step 3: Gently pry off the back cover starting from the top, working around the edges. Don’t force it.

Step 4: Locate the SSD (small black M.2 card near the center). Remove the single retaining screw, pull the SSD at a 30° angle.

Step 5: Insert your new SSD at 30°, press down, replace the retaining screw. Don’t overtighten.

Step 6: Replace back panel and all 8 screws. Remember: shorter screws go in the outer positions.

Re-imaging SteamOS

After installing the new SSD, you need to reinstall SteamOS:

  1. Download the SteamOS recovery image from store.steampowered.com/steamos
  2. Flash it to a USB drive using Rufus or Balena Etcher
  3. Boot the Steam Deck with the USB plugged in (hold Volume Down + Power)
  4. Select “Re-image Steam Deck” and follow the prompts
  5. Log in with your Steam account — your game library syncs automatically

FAQs

Does upgrading the SSD void the warranty?
Valve explicitly states opening the Steam Deck for SSD upgrades is user-serviceable and doesn’t void the warranty.

Will my games transfer automatically?
No — you’ll need to reinstall games. However, cloud saves sync back automatically when you log into Steam.

Is Gen 4 SSD worth it over Gen 3?
In practice, the Steam Deck doesn’t fully saturate Gen 3 speeds. Gen 4 provides minimal real-world benefit but doesn’t hurt.
