How to Play Minecraft on Steam Deck (Java & Bedrock)

Minecraft runs on Steam Deck with both the Java Edition and Bedrock Edition available. Java runs natively through Steam or via a dedicated launcher. Bedrock requires a workaround since the Windows version does not run on Linux, but it is fully achievable in 2026 with the right setup.

Java Edition: The Easy Way

Minecraft Java Edition runs natively on Linux and works on Steam Deck without any special configuration. Buy it from minecraft.net, install the official Minecraft Launcher, and it runs through Proton. Performance is strong, expect 60fps at medium-high settings at handheld resolution. The game is rated Verified on Steam Deck by Valve.

To install via the official launcher:

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck
  2. Download the Minecraft Launcher from minecraft.net (Linux version)
  3. Open it, log in with your Microsoft account, and install Java Edition
  4. Add the launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game so it appears in Gaming Mode
  5. Launch and play

Alternatively, install Prism Launcher from the Discover app store in Desktop Mode. Prism is an open-source Minecraft launcher that handles multiple versions and supports mods via Modrinth. It is often more convenient than the official launcher for modded setups.

Bedrock Edition: The Workaround

Bedrock Edition does not have a native Linux version. The workaround is to install it via MCXboxBackup or through a compatibility layer. The simplest approach in 2026 is using Minecraft Bedrock via the Xbox app through Bottles (a Windows compatibility tool available in the Discover store on SteamOS).

The process takes about 30 minutes to configure correctly. Once running, Bedrock performance is good, 60fps at default settings is achievable. Crossplay with other Bedrock platforms (mobile, console, Windows) works correctly.

For most players, Java Edition is the better choice on Steam Deck. It runs more cleanly, supports the full mod ecosystem, and requires no workarounds. Switch to Bedrock only if you specifically need crossplay with console or mobile players.

Best Settings for Minecraft on Steam Deck

Default Minecraft settings are not optimized for Steam Deck. These settings get you the best balance of performance and visual quality:

  • Render distance: 8-12 chunks. Above 12 chunks causes frame drops and heavy battery drain. 8 chunks is fine for most play styles.
  • Graphics: Fast (not Fancy). Fancy rendering tanks performance with no meaningful visual improvement at handheld resolution.
  • Smooth lighting: On. Minimal performance cost, large visual improvement.
  • VSync: Off. Use the Steam Deck’s Quick Access Menu to cap at 60fps instead. This eliminates input lag from VSync while keeping frames stable.
  • TDP: Set to 8-10W via Quick Access Menu. Minecraft is not demanding and does not need full power. Lower TDP means better battery life.

Mods on Steam Deck

Mods work on Steam Deck Java Edition through Prism Launcher with Modrinth integration. Install Fabric or Forge as the mod loader, then add mods from inside the launcher. Popular performance mods like Sodium, Iris, and Lithium are strongly recommended, they can double your frame rate with no visual downgrade.

The Sodium mod in particular is transformative. It rewrites Minecraft’s rendering engine for modern hardware. With Sodium installed, render distance of 16 chunks becomes achievable at 60fps on Steam Deck, which is not possible with vanilla Java.

Controller Setup

Minecraft Java Edition supports controllers natively through the Controllify mod (available on Modrinth). Install it via Prism Launcher and the Steam Deck’s controls work correctly out of the box. The right trackpad makes a good substitute for mouse aiming with the sensitivity tuned in-game.

Without Controllify, you can use Steam Input to map keyboard and mouse functions to the controller. This works but requires manual configuration. The Controllify route is faster and cleaner.

Multiplayer

Java Edition multiplayer works on Steam Deck with no extra steps. Connect to any Java server by IP address from the multiplayer menu. Realms subscriptions work normally. LAN play with other Java Edition players on the same network also works.
