Lenovo Legion Go S Review 2026: The Best Non-Valve Handheld
The Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS edition is the most significant handheld launch of 2026. It runs SteamOS natively — the same OS as the Steam Deck — but with a bigger screen, more performance, and longer battery life than any previous Windows handheld. If you want more than the Steam Deck offers without giving up the SteamOS experience, this is it.
What Makes the Legion Go S Different
Until now, every alternative to the Steam Deck ran Windows. Windows gives you more software compatibility but kills battery life and requires more setup. The Legion Go S SteamOS edition breaks that pattern. You get SteamOS’s polished gaming interface, Proton compatibility, and efficient power management in a larger, more powerful package.
Screen
The Legion Go S has an 8-inch 1200p IPS display. That is larger than the Steam Deck OLED’s 7.4-inch panel and sharper at 1200p versus the Deck’s 1280×800 resolution. The Go S screen is bright, color-accurate, and comfortable for extended handheld sessions.
The Steam Deck OLED still has better contrast and black levels thanks to its AMOLED panel. For gaming in dark environments, the OLED wins. For general use and bright room gaming, the Go S screen’s size advantage shows.
Performance
The Legion Go S uses an AMD chip with more compute units than the Steam Deck’s custom APU. At matched graphics settings, the Go S runs demanding games 20 to 35 percent faster than the Deck. This headroom matters for AAA titles that the Deck runs at 40fps — the Go S pushes some of them to stable 60fps at the same settings.
Battery Life
This is the surprise. The Legion Go S SteamOS edition lasts 5 to 7 hours on moderate gaming loads. SteamOS’s power management brings the Go S battery performance in line with the Steam Deck despite the more powerful hardware. Previous Legion Go Windows models got 2 to 3 hours. SteamOS changes that completely.
SteamOS on the Legion Go S
Lenovo ships the SteamOS edition with a fully licensed version of SteamOS. The gaming interface, Proton compatibility, and controller support all work identically to the Steam Deck. Your Steam library, EmuDeck setup, and Decky Loader plugins all carry over.
The Go S controller layout adds a few extra buttons compared to the Deck and includes Hall effect sticks. Back paddles are present and configurable through Steam’s controller settings.
Legion Go S vs Steam Deck OLED
The Go S costs around $729 versus $549 for the Steam Deck OLED. For the extra $180 you get a bigger screen, more performance, and slightly better sustained power efficiency. You give up the OLED panel and Valve’s direct hardware-software integration.
For most people, the Steam Deck OLED is still the better value. For people who specifically want more screen or more performance and are happy to pay for it, the Legion Go S SteamOS edition is the upgrade.
Legion Go S vs Windows Handhelds
The ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X both run Windows and cost $799 to $999. They have more peak performance but half the battery life. If you want performance without sacrificing battery, the Legion Go S SteamOS is a better choice than any Windows handheld at any price.
Verdict
The Legion Go S SteamOS edition is the best non-Valve handheld available in 2026. Bigger screen, more performance, competitive battery life, and the same SteamOS experience you get on the Steam Deck. Buy it if you want the Deck experience with more headroom. Stick with the Deck if value per dollar is the priority.
