Bazzite OS on ROG Ally: How to Install and Why Battery Life Doubles

Bazzite is a Linux distribution built specifically for gaming handhelds. It brings a SteamOS-like experience to the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and other Windows-based handhelds that Valve does not officially support. Installing it transforms a Windows handheld into something that behaves like a Steam Deck.

What Is Bazzite?

Bazzite is based on Fedora Linux with a gaming-optimized layer on top. For the ROG Ally and Ally X, it provides:

  • A Steam Deck-style Gaming Mode interface that boots directly to a game launcher
  • Optimized ROG Ally drivers for the display, controls, and power management
  • Better battery life than Windows through more efficient resource management
  • Access to the full Steam library via Proton
  • Desktop Mode (KDE Plasma) for when you need a full desktop environment

Bazzite is free and maintained by a large open-source community. As of 2026, ROG Ally driver support in Bazzite is mature enough that most functions work correctly out of the box.

How to Install Bazzite on ROG Ally X

The installation process takes 30 to 60 minutes and requires a USB drive of at least 8GB.

  1. Download the Bazzite ISO for ROG Ally from bazzite.gg (choose the ROG Ally / Handheld variant)
  2. Flash it to a USB drive using Rufus (Windows) or Balena Etcher
  3. Boot the ROG Ally X from the USB drive (hold Volume Down and press Power to enter boot menu)
  4. Run the Bazzite installer, it walks through partitioning and setup
  5. After installation, the system reboots into Bazzite’s Gaming Mode

Bazzite can be installed alongside Windows (dual-boot) or as a full replacement. Dual-boot is recommended for new users so you can return to Windows if needed. The installer handles dual-boot setup automatically if Windows is already on the device.

Performance After Installing Bazzite

Battery life improves noticeably on Bazzite compared to Windows on the ROG Ally X. Windows background processes, the Armoury Crate software, and anti-virus scanning all consume power that Bazzite does not. In light-to-medium games, expect 1 to 2 additional hours per charge.

Game performance is comparable to Windows for most Steam titles. Proton handles the vast majority of the Steam catalog. For games with aggressive anti-cheat (some online shooters), Windows remains the safer choice.

Should You Install Bazzite on Your ROG Ally X?

Install Bazzite if you primarily play Steam games and want a better handheld interface and longer battery life. The SteamOS-like Gaming Mode is genuinely more pleasant to use than Windows for handheld gaming.

Stick with Windows if you rely on Xbox Game Pass local downloads, play games with aggressive anti-cheat, or need the ROG Ally X to function as a Windows PC for work tasks.

I have personally tested the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Retroid Pocket 5, Anbernic RG556, and Lenovo Legion Go. I built The Respawn Rig because I was tired of hunting through outdated forums every time I had a question about portable gaming. Everything I write here is based on real hands-on time with the hardware.
