Best Emulators for Steam Deck: The Complete Guide (2026)

The Steam Deck is one of the best emulation devices ever made. The hardware is powerful enough to handle everything up through PS2 and GameCube at full speed, and SteamOS makes it easy to install and run emulators without touching a command line. EmuDeck does most of the setup for you.

This guide covers the best emulators for Steam Deck in 2026, what each one runs well, and how to get them working.

EmuDeck: The Fastest Way to Set Up Emulation

Before getting into individual emulators, install EmuDeck first. EmuDeck is a script that installs and configures all major emulators in one shot, sets up ROMs folders, configures controller mappings, and integrates everything into Steam so you can launch games directly from Gaming Mode.

Install it in Desktop Mode from emudeck.com. The whole process takes about 15 minutes. After that, every emulator on this list is ready to use with correct settings already applied.

Best Emulators for Steam Deck

Yuzu / Ryujinx, Nintendo Switch

Switch emulation on Steam Deck works well for most games in 2026. Many titles run at or near native performance. Games like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Pokemon Scarlet run smoothly with the right settings. More demanding titles like Tears of the Kingdom require per-game tuning, drop to 720p, enable FSR, and experiment with the GPU accuracy setting.

Note that both Yuzu and Ryujinx had legal issues in 2024. Community forks (Suyu, Torzu, and others) continue the codebase. EmuDeck installs the current working version. You need Switch keys from your own console to run games legally.

RPCS3, PlayStation 3

PS3 emulation is excellent in 2026. RPCS3 runs most of the PS3 library, and on Steam Deck the compatibility is strong for mid-tier games. Demanding titles like Red Dead Redemption and The Last of Us require good settings to hit 30fps. Less demanding PS3 games like Demon’s Souls and God of War III run at a locked 30fps without much tuning.

Download RPCS3 from rpcs3.net. You need a PS3 firmware file from Sony’s website (free) and your own game files. EmuDeck installs RPCS3 and handles the firmware setup automatically.

PCSX2, PlayStation 2

PS2 emulation is essentially perfect on Steam Deck. PCSX2 runs the entire PS2 library at full speed, often at higher resolution than the original hardware. Set internal resolution to 2x or 3x native for noticeably sharper visuals. Games like Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, and GTA San Andreas look significantly better than on original hardware.

PS2 emulation is also lightweight enough that you can push TDP down to 6-8W and still maintain 60fps, which is great for battery life.

Dolphin, GameCube and Wii

Dolphin runs GameCube and Wii games at full speed on Steam Deck with headroom to spare. Set internal resolution to 2x or 3x for cleaner visuals. Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, and most of the GameCube library run perfectly. Wii games that use motion controls require some remapping but work well once configured.

EmuDeck configures Dolphin with optimized Steam Deck settings. Gyro controls can substitute for Wii Remote motion in many games.

RetroArch, Everything Older

RetroArch is a frontend that runs dozens of emulator cores in one app. For everything from NES through PS1 and N64, RetroArch handles it cleanly. The interface takes some learning but EmuDeck sets up the most useful cores automatically: Beetle PSX for PlayStation, Mupen64Plus for N64, Snes9x for SNES, and Genesis Plus GX for Sega.

PS1 games run at 2x to 4x resolution with no performance issues. N64 emulation is solid for most games with occasional per-game fixes needed for accuracy.

PPSSPP, PlayStation Portable

PSP emulation on Steam Deck is outstanding. PPSSPP runs the entire PSP library at 3x to 5x resolution with no slowdown. God of War: Chains of Olympus, Crisis Core, Persona 3 Portable, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite all run perfectly at high resolution. Battery draw is also very light, expect 6 or more hours on a single charge for PSP games.

Citra, Nintendo 3DS

3DS emulation has improved significantly. Citra (and its forks like Lime3DS) run most 3DS games well on Steam Deck. Pokemon X/Y, Fire Emblem Fates, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds all run at full speed. Like Switch emulation, you need keys and game files from your own hardware.

Where to Get ROMs Legally

The legal way to use emulators is to dump ROMs from games you own. For cartridge-based systems, tools like GBxCart RW (for Game Boy/GBA) and a modded 3DS can dump your own cartridges. For disc-based systems, a PC with a disc drive and decryption tools handles the ripping. This takes more effort than downloading files, but it is the correct approach.
