Is the Steam Deck Worth It

The short answer: it depends on which Steam Deck you are comparing and what you need from a handheld. After Valve’s May 2026 price increase, the calculus changed. Here is the honest breakdown.

Current Steam Deck Prices (Updated May 2026)

Valve raised prices on May 27, 2026 with no announcement. Current prices:

  • Steam Deck OLED 512GB: $789 (was $549)
  • Steam Deck OLED 1TB: $949 (was $649)

The LCD model was discontinued. The OLED is the only Steam Deck available new. The increase is roughly 44 to 46 percent across the board, likely driven by US tariffs on electronics manufactured in China.

What the Steam Deck Does Well

Battery life. The Steam Deck OLED lasts 4 to 9 hours depending on the game. That beats every Windows handheld on the market. The ROG Ally X gets 3 to 5 hours. For travel or portable gaming, the Deck has a clear advantage.

The OLED display. The 7.4-inch 90Hz OLED panel is the best screen on any gaming handheld. Colors are vivid, blacks are deep, and the 90Hz refresh makes motion noticeably smoother than 60Hz alternatives. If you care about display quality, nothing else matches it.

SteamOS. SteamOS is a better gaming interface than Windows for handheld use. It boots straight to a console-like launcher, manages power settings per game automatically, and handles Proton compatibility for most PC games without configuration. No Windows update restarts, no background processes eating RAM.

Game library. Steam has the largest PC game library available. Most games work via Proton without any user action. The Steam Deck community maintains ProtonDB, a database of compatibility reports, so you can check any game before buying.

Repairability. Valve designed the Steam Deck to be user-serviceable. iFixit sells official replacement parts. Replacing the battery, thumbsticks, or screen is achievable with basic tools and a guide. No other gaming handheld comes close on repairability.

Where It Falls Short

Raw performance. The Steam Deck’s AMD APU is capable but not powerful. Demanding AAA games at native resolution require settings compromises. The ROG Ally X runs most games noticeably faster at the same or higher settings.

No Game Pass without workarounds. Xbox Game Pass does not have a native SteamOS app. You can run it through a browser or via Bazzite OS with extra configuration, but it is not a clean experience. If Game Pass is important to you, a Windows handheld is more practical.

Size and weight. The Steam Deck is large and heavy compared to a Nintendo Switch. It does not fit in a jacket pocket and takes up meaningful backpack space. Smaller handhelds like the Switch 2 or Retroid Pocket 5 are more portable.

How It Compares at Current Prices

Who Should Buy the Steam Deck

The Steam Deck OLED at $789 is still the right choice if you prioritize any of these: OLED display quality, battery life above all else, SteamOS as a polished gaming interface, or the Steam library specifically. It was a better value at $549, but the device itself has not changed.

It is the wrong choice if you primarily want Windows compatibility, Xbox Game Pass, or maximum performance in demanding games. The ROG Ally X at $799 is now a direct price competitor and wins on performance.

If budget is the primary concern, buy used. Steam Deck OLED units on eBay and Facebook Marketplace run $400 to $500 in good condition. The device is durable and repairable, so a used unit from a careful seller is a reasonable risk.

Should You Wait?

The ASUS ROG Ally 2026 is expected to be announced at Computex (June 2-5, 2026). A new generation ROG Ally announcement would likely push prices down on the current generation. If you are not in a rush, waiting two to four weeks for Computex coverage makes sense.
